    session 5

Practice all skills learnt the previous week and then move on to boundary setting through intention and the use of energy creating a dialogue of pressure and release through minimal cues, respect and communication. This week focuses on mental and emotional training tools for emotional regulation.

  • session 6

Practice all the learnings of the last weeks and add in another important piece of the puzzle: How to request cooperation, focus and trust at a distance from a horse. Focusing on how to use a horse’s natural herding instincts to support safety and calm. Explore how your body language supports from a distance and apply the subtle cues that you have been working on across this course. This will be your final week without saddles and you will then graduate to join us on a level 2 the next session.

  • session 7 - level 2

This week we will saddle up and do all our groundwork as well as practice all the other skills that you have learnt. We will now start our checks to see if the horse is ready to be ridden by doing the exercises to gauge whether the horse is calm, focused, and mentally engaged. These will help you identify any physical discomfort or emotional tension. This practice ensures that the horse is ready to work safely and effectively, both on the ground and in the saddle.

  • session 8

We will go over everything learnt so far with saddles, check in for any discomfort and emotional tension so as to work safely and then check in for lightness in the reins cues from the ground. This will work on the horse’s willingness to listen to commands whilst in the saddle and demonstrate the level of trust the horse is willing to give to the rider. Should everything go well, we will request climbing into the saddle and respect the horse’s yes or no.

  • session 9

We will practice all we have learnt and then request to get in the saddle. We will work with you and the horse to make sure that the trust you have built is taken into the saddle. We will work on staying in the moment and work through anything that the horse mirrors. We will then work through the reins aids.

  • session 10

We will practice all we have learnt and continue working on the rein aids and then requesting the moving and stopping of the feet through energy only and breathwork.

  • level 3

In level 3, we want to be working in walk and trot paying attention to straight lines, bends and circles. The aids should be effortless without the coach seeing you pulling on either rein or kicking. We want balanced rising and sitting trots as well as turning from the outside aids and bending using inside leg to outside rein.

Take your riding to the next level by incorporating biomechanics and asking the horse to use their body correctly. What we will cover:

Walk and trot through intention, energy and breathwork with a touch of working canter.

Balance and steadiness - encourage the horse to step out correctly in his paces to a steady tempo.

Shape of patterns - attention to detail when requesting a figure of 8 or 20m circle, supporting the horse to carry himself correctly.

Proper bend - supporting the horse to use his body effectively.

Encourage the horse to be fluid and elastic in his movement - no heads up in the air not using our toplines here. An effortless working rising trot is a must have as well as a medium walk and change of rein on a free rein.

  • level 4

Start introducing extreme accuracy and rhythm. Lots of transitions and getting your requests so subtle that an observer doesn’t see what you have requested. What we will cover:

Basic walk, trot and canter on straight lines and 20m circles.

The horse should move freely forward in a clear rhythm with a steady tempo.

Impulsion: The horse should step forward energetically with its hind feet

Straightness: The horse should move straight without swinging its hindquarters to the side

Relaxed: The horse should work through its back to make it easier to move from movement to movement and transition to transition.

Free walk: The horse should stretch as much as possible stretching out its topline.

We will start introducing pole work and obstacles.

At this level, you may join our trail ride sessions heading out to the forest and occasionally to the beach.

Walk pirouette: A movement that is first seen at medium level. We cover this advanced move early as our horses find it really useful to balance and teach the correct aids.
