Imagine yourself and your horse moving together in perfect harmony on the ground—no reins, no whips, no tack, just a fluid, connected partnership. In our "Liberty Horsemanship" classes, we combine the technical aspects (biomechanics etc) of classical training, obstacles, pole work, jumping and so much more with the freedom of liberty work. This unique approach allows participants to perform intricate dressage movements, from piaffes to pirouettes, while honouring the horse’s natural instincts, free will, and individual rhythm. It’s a dance where both horse and rider are in sync, creating a stunning display of trust, understanding, and mutual respect.
-
Dancing at liberty emphasizes the deep trust between the rider and the horse. In this form of horsemanship, you and your horse communicate primarily through body language, energy, and intention—without relying on reins, tack, or constraints. The beauty lies in the horse’s choice to engage and participate in the movements. Through trust and understanding, the horse willingly responds to your cues, even in complex manoeuvers, making each movement an expression of the horse’s free will.
-
One of the most beautiful aspects of dancing at liberty is that it allows the horse to express themselves in their own unique way. While you guide them through specific movements, you also give them the freedom to interpret each cue in a manner that feels natural to them. This kind of freedom fosters creativity, allowing the horse to move with grace, fluidity, and personality.
Each horse is different, and liberty work respects these individual qualities. Whether your horse is light and energetic or more relaxed and thoughtful, the dance at liberty allows them to shine in a way that honours their unique nature, making every performance an expression of the horse’s true self.
-
This practice is about creating a space where the horse feels empowered, respected, and motivated to move through challenges with ease and willingness, all while allowing them the freedom to choose.
One of the most profound benefits of liberty work with obstacles is how it empowers the horse. When a horse works through obstacles without a halter, lead rope, or tack, they are in complete control of their decisions. This freedom gives them the opportunity to learn that they can approach and overcome challenges on their own terms, at their own pace.
Autonomy: Horses gain confidence in their own ability to assess and navigate the obstacles. When they successfully navigate a challenge like a jump, a tarp, or a narrow passage, they build trust in their own instincts and problem-solving skills.
Positive Reinforcement: Every successful completion of an obstacle is rewarded not with pressure, but with encouragement. This positive feedback loop helps horses feel more confident in their ability to handle new challenges.
-
Horse interaction has long been recognized for its therapeutic benefits. Liberty Horsemanship classes can provide a calm, grounding, and meditative experience for individuals who are seeking emotional healing, stress relief, or simply a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The act of connecting with horses in a meaningful way can foster feelings of relaxation, focus, and well-being.
bitless & liberty
horse riding
For riders who want to explore a more compassionate, effective and harmonious way of working with horses to an international standard—without relying on a bit, or a whip, or spurs, or any other force based training technique.
Once you have completed our foundations course, you will learn bitless and once you are confident and effective at riding using your seat, breathwork and energy whilst using exceedingly subtle aids - then only then will we start to explore riding in a neckrope and then if you wish completely at liberty safely as we do not use whips or treats when riding at liberty. Riding tackless is more than just a method of riding; it’s a philosophy of connection, mutual respect, and understanding. It’s about working with the horse in a way that allows both the rider and the horse to feel free, connected, and in tune with each other’s movements and energy. The natural, subtle communication that arises from riding without tack promotes trust, respect, and a deeper bond, creating an experience that is both beautiful and transformative. In the absence of tack, the rider and horse become one, communicating through their bodies, breath, and energy in a way that feels both effortless and profound. This connection—based on trust, respect, and mutual understanding—lies at the heart of the beauty of riding tackless.
-
Riding bitless is a powerful and gentle approach that allows horses and riders to communicate through soft, clear signals, without the use of a traditional bit. This method requires a deep understanding of several factors—biomechanics, breathwork, boundary setting, body language, effective aids, intention, and energy—to establish harmony and fluidity in the ride.
-
Biomechanics is the study of movement in both humans and animals, focusing on how forces are generated and distributed through the body. In bitless riding, understanding the biomechanics of both the rider and the horse is crucial to creating smooth communication and effective movement.
For the Rider: It’s important to maintain an independent seat and a balanced position to avoid interfering with the horse’s natural movement. A correct posture ensures that you are not causing undue tension, which could affect the horse’s comfort or response.
-
Breathwork is an essential tool in bitless riding, helping both the rider and the horse remain calm, focused, and in sync. The rider’s breath can serve as a tool to influence the horse’s state of mind and help maintain a calm, relaxed connection.
For the Rider: Focusing on deep, slow breathing can help the rider stay calm, reduce tension, and prevent erratic movements that could confuse or unsettle the horse. The rider’s breath can serve as a rhythm for the horse, syncing with their movement and helping maintain relaxation.
Learn how we have trained our horses to follow our intention and breath for an easier and more connected fun ride.
Breathing together helps both the rider and horse align physically and mentally, fostering a harmonious partnership.
-
Body language is one of the most effective tools in riding. Horses are naturally attuned to non-verbal cues, and the rider’s body language serves as a powerful means of communication.
For the Rider: The way you hold your body, how you move your seat, and how you position your legs and arms all send messages to the horse. The rider’s posture and subtle shifts in weight are the first things a horse will pick up on when responding to cues. Our schoolmasters are highly trained and very responsive so will feedback and support you to be as subtle as possible.
Using clear and confident body language helps prevent confusion, creating a more fluid and responsive ride with any horse in your future.
-
Effective aids are essential in riding to communicate with the horse without causing discomfort or confusion. Aids include the rider’s hands, legs, seat, and voice, and in riding, the focus is on using these aids in a subtle, non-intrusive way. No barrel kicking or pulling here.
Mastering effective aids ensures that the horse understands what is being asked without force or confusion.
-
Intention plays a significant role in riding, as the rider's mental focus sets the tone for the interaction with the horse. A rider’s intention guides the entire ride, influencing the horse’s behaviour, attitude, and responses.
Having a strong, focused intention ensures that both the rider and horse are aligned in their goals and movements.
Taking ego out of the equation and focusing on your partnership is our most important goal at all times keeping everyone safe.
-
The energy you project through your body, mind, and emotions communicates to the horse on a deeper level, influencing their behaviour and responses.
For the Rider: Your energy—whether calm and steady or focused and driven—guides the horse's energy. If a rider is tense or anxious, the horse is likely to mirror that energy. Conversely, a rider who maintains positive and focused energy can encourage the horse to remain calm, confident, and willing.
Often a forward going horse with one rider may be reluctant to move forwards with another - horses are sensitive to how you direct your energy and where.
For the Horse: Horses are incredibly sensitive to energy and often respond to the subtle shifts in the rider’s weight distribution and tension in their muscles. By projecting the right energy—whether it’s a soft, nurturing energy for relaxation or an assertive energy for focus—the rider can influence the horse’s behaviour and create a smoother and more responsive ride.
Energy is the unseen force that guides the entire experience, creating a deep, intuitive connection between horse and rider.
-
Riding tackless—also known as riding without saddles, bridles, or any traditional tack (including whips or spurs)—offers a profound and transformative experience for both horse and rider. In this practice, the focus shifts to an entirely natural form of communication between the two, relying on body language, energy, and instinct. It’s a beautiful and empowering way to ride, built on trust, mutual respect, and understanding.
When riding tackless, all communication with the horse becomes more intuitive and natural. Without the constraints of reins or a saddle, both the rider and horse become more aware of each other’s movements, energy, and intentions.
Riding without tack fosters a deeper sense of trust and respect between the horse and rider. With no bit or saddle to rely on, the horse must trust the rider’s body language and intent. The rider, in turn, learns to respect the horse’s boundaries and signals, recognising the horse as an active participant in the ride.
We do have a few horses that prefer to wear their custom fitted personalised saddles for the more complicated work as it helps to distribute the rider’s weight supporting the horse to be more athletic in the advanced moves.
Riding tackless helps develop sensitivity to the horse’s movements, mood, and energy. The absence of tack means that the rider and horse are in closer physical contact, allowing for a more tactile connection. This creates a heightened sense of awareness between the two, where every shift in weight, breath, and movement becomes part of the conversation.
One of the most beautiful aspects of riding tackless is the feeling of freedom it offers to both horse and rider. This freedom enhances the feeling of lightness in both bodies, creating a fluid and effortless connection.
Riding tackless encourages a deep, non-verbal connection. With no reins to pull on or stirrups to push against, the rider and horse communicate primarily through body language, energy, and intention. This form of silent communication strengthens the bond between the two, allowing for a more subtle and intuitive relationship.
Riding tackless promotes a beautiful sense of unity between horse and rider. Both are fully engaged in the experience, moving together in harmony. This creates a seamless flow of movement, where the rider and horse function as one unit, responding to each other’s cues in a fluid, effortless way.
Riding tackless demands heightened mindfulness and presence from the rider. Since there’s no tack to rely on, the rider must be fully present in every moment, consciously working with the horse to ensure they are moving together. This mindful approach enhances the riding experience, fostering a deeper level of awareness and connection.
bitless driving
ground & cart
-
If you’re nervous about being on horseback or simply not interested in riding, long reining provides a safer way to work with horses. It allows you to practice controlling the horse’s movements without being mounted. This is ideal for individuals who want to engage with horses while avoiding the physical demands and potential risks of riding.
-
Since long reining involves guiding the horse through transitions between gaits, it helps riders develop a better sense of timing. You’ll practice asking the horse to transition from walk to trot, trot to canter, and back again while maintaining control. This makes you more adept at timing transitions when you’re riding, ensuring smoother and more seamless changes.
-
For those who love horses but may not be interested in riding, driving offers an alternative way to enjoy the connection with these majestic animals. It’s a wonderful way to engage with horses without the complexities of riding. The experience of leading the horse and cart offers a fresh perspective on horsemanship and adds excitement to your equestrian journey.
-
Driving a cart allows you to experience speed in a way that’s both thrilling and controlled. Whether you’re trotting along a trail, cantering across an open field, or racing through a driving course, the speed is adrenaline-pumping, but you always have the ability to slow down and maintain control. It’s a perfect balance of freedom and focus.
-
The thrill of driving a cart is a truly unique and rewarding experience. It combines the joy of working with horses, the excitement of control, and the mental challenge of navigating and maneuvering. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely drive through the countryside, competing in a driving event, or simply building a deeper relationship with your horse, cart driving offers an unparalleled sense of freedom, excitement, and fulfillment.
If you’re looking for a new equestrian adventure, cart driving might just be the perfect thrill you’ve been searching for!
-
Long reining allows you to work directly with the horse, building trust and improving communication. You’ll learn to interact with the horse using body language, subtle cues, and voice commands, which helps you form a bond with the horse even without riding. This connection can make your relationship with the horse more fulfilling and responsive.
-
Understanding how a horse moves is key to developing empathy and knowledge about horses. Long reining provides a unique opportunity to observe and influence the horse's movements from the ground. By watching how the horse reacts to different cues and moves through various gaits, you'll gain insight into the mechanics of their body and the way they respond to guidance.
-
Long reining teaches important groundwork techniques such as teaching a horse to walk, halt, and turn in response to reins and body position. These are foundational skills that you can apply whether you're planning to work with horses in a training context, use them for driving, or simply want to improve their behaviour.
-
Unlike riding, long reining doesn’t require any prior equestrian experience. It’s a perfect introduction to working with horses, allowing you to engage with them in a way that doesn’t involve being in the saddle. All you need is a willingness to learn and an open mind.
-
Because long reining requires you to work closely with the horse, you’ll develop patience and a keen sense of timing. You’ll learn to give clear, consistent cues and be patient while the horse responds. This skill is not only valuable for horse training but also for personal growth, helping you become more precise and attuned to non-verbal communication.
-
Even if you're not riding, long reining provides horses with essential physical exercise. The controlled work helps to strengthen muscles, build stamina, and improve flexibility. You will be actively involved in guiding the horse, contributing to their fitness while learning valuable skills yourself.
-
If you are considering owning a horse, long reining is an excellent way to start developing skills before committing to riding or driving. It gives you the tools to handle a horse safely, understand their behavior, and develop effective communication, all of which are invaluable when managing horses in any capacity.
Are you ready to experience the thrill of driving horses and carts? Whether you're a beginner or an experienced rider, our Driving Horses and Carting Courses are the perfect opportunity to learn hands-on, with the guidance of experienced instructors and the support of our well-trained horses. Driving is perfect if you no longer wish to ride for fitness or health reasons or need to build your confidence.
Once you have completed our foundations course, you can specialise to drive - we start by long reining. Long reining is a valuable training technique that allows you to work with your horse from the ground, using long reins to guide and control the horse’s movement. It’s an essential skill in various forms of training, including groundwork, driving, and starting a young horse as well as teaching a horse the more complicated moves (such as laterals, pirouette, piaffe, passage, etc). Once ready and if you wish to do so, we will move to driving a cart. However, this is also a very useful course for those wanting to improve their ridden experience as you learn to watch the horse’s biomechanics, feedback etc from the ground calmly.
Driving a cart is an incredibly accessible and rewarding activity for people of all skill levels and backgrounds. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a complete beginner.
australian liberty equestrian academy

.
At the Australian Liberty Equestrian Academy, our philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for both horses and humans, emphasising partnership, trust, and ethical horsemanship. We are committed to cultivating an environment where both horse and rider can thrive, grow, and develop in a manner that is both compassionate and empowering. Our ethos reflects a holistic approach to equestrianism that values the well-being of the horse, the growth of the rider, and the bond that can be formed through liberty. We are qualified and have trained our horses to support beginners right through to advanced.
-
Our academy is built on a foundation of respect for horses as sentient beings with unique needs, personalities, and emotions. We believe in fostering a connection with horses based on kindness, patience, and mutual understanding. This ethos informs every aspect of our teaching, riding and horsemanship approach.
No Force, No Fear: We are committed to a non-coercive approach that avoids the use of force or fear in training. Our methods encourage collaboration rather than domination, allowing the horse to willingly engage with the rider and trust in the relationship.
Recognizing the Horse’s Autonomy: Horses are given the freedom to express themselves and make choices within a framework of clear and respectful guidance. This builds their confidence and ensures they are emotionally and physically engaged in the work.
-
At the heart of our academy lies the belief that horsemanship is about creating a partnership between horse and rider. This partnership is based on trust, understanding, and clear communication.
Mutual Respect: We view the relationship between horse and rider as one of mutual respect. The rider learns to listen to the horse, respond to its needs, and communicate effectively through body language and energy. In return, the horse learns to trust the rider and respond willingly to their cues.
Trust-Centered Learning: We emphasize building trust at every level of horsemanship. Our goal is to create a strong bond where the horse feels safe, valued, and motivated to engage in work alongside the rider.
-
We adopt a holistic approach that considers the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of the horse. We aim to address the horse’s needs in a balanced way, integrating groundwork, liberty work, and traditional riding in a manner that promotes overall harmony and wellness.
Empowerment through Choice: Liberty horsemanship allows horses to make their own decisions within a safe environment. This empowers them to become active participants in their training and personal growth, increasing their confidence and cooperation.
Balanced Approach: We combine traditional equestrian disciplines with science based horsemanship techniques to ensure horses receive well-rounded education and care. This fosters a greater understanding of the horse’s natural instincts and communication methods while still achieving advanced work in dressage, jumping, and other disciplines.
-
Our academy is dedicated to promoting high standards of integrity and ethics in all our practices. We operate with transparency, honesty, and accountability, always striving to create an environment that reflects these values.
Honoring the Horse’s Voice: We believe that a horse’s well-being should always be at the forefront of any training process. We actively listen to the horse’s cues, ensuring that training is always conducted in a manner that respects their limits and promotes long-term health.
Ethical Riding: We encourage riders to take responsibility for their actions and to always be mindful of the ethical implications of their training methods. Our focus is on developing riders who are not only skilled but also compassionate and considerate of their horse’s needs.
-
At the Australian Liberty Equestrian Academy, we believe that the journey of horsemanship is as much about the growth of the rider as it is about the development of the horse. We aim to nurture riders into compassionate, skilled, and mindful equestrians.
Self-Awareness and Connection: We emphasize the importance of emotional intelligence and self-awareness in the riding process. Riders learn how to connect with their horses on a deeper level by cultivating an understanding of their own energy, body language, and intentions.
Lifelong Learning: Our academy fosters an environment of continuous learning, encouraging riders to progress at their own pace. Whether they are beginners or advanced, we support every rider’s journey, helping them develop not just their riding skills but also their personal relationship with horses.
-
We believe in creating a strong, supportive community where riders can learn, grow, and share their experiences. Our academy fosters an environment where both horses and riders are supported every step of the way.
Supportive Environment: Our instructors are dedicated to providing personalized attention to every rider, ensuring that they feel valued and supported as they progress. The focus is always on positive reinforcement, encouragement, and empowerment.
A Shared Journey: Riders at the academy become part of a close-knit community that shares a passion for horses and horsemanship. We celebrate the successes and milestones of each rider and horse, creating a supportive space where learning is a shared journey.
The Heart of the
Australian Liberty Equestrian Academy
The Australian Liberty Equestrian Academy’s values and ethos are rooted in a deep commitment to ethical, compassionate horsemanship that honours both the horse’s and human’s journey and free will. Through mutual respect, trust, and holistic practices, we empower both horses and riders to develop in a way that promotes well-being, confidence, and lifelong learning.
Our aim is to create a space where individuals can build meaningful, respectful relationships with horses, while also developing the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the equestrian world to an international standard. At the Australian Liberty Equestrian Academy, every horse and rider is respected, nurtured, and celebrated as they grow together.
At the Australian Liberty Equestrian Academy, we:
Embrace the needs of our herd of horses. Freedom, Forage and Friends.
Support you at your own pace, providing you space to be the best horse person that you can be.
Educate you on every aspect of horse ownership from catching in the paddock, etiquette around horses, keeping a yard tidy and free from hazards, how to support a horse to have the best life in captivity, tacking up and looking after the tack to avoid injuries, honouring free will for all, groundwork, biomechanics, breathwork, after care, wound care, heat care, feeding horses to their nutritional requirements, riding, jumping, dressage, trail rides, pole work and so much more.
Give you space to be with the horse and therefore do not cram everything into 45 minutes.
Teach you how to warm up a horse on your own so that from level 3 onwards, you will be independent in warming up both you and your horse though we are always close by to support you to make decisions that are right for you and the horse. As we progress through the levels, you will become more autonomous.
Do not have the horse tacked up waiting for you to go from lesson to lesson and our horses do not work with multiple clients per day. They are reserved exclusively for their person and they look forward to seeing you on your day usually greeting you enthusiastically at the gate or cantering up if they are late.
Provide you with a certificate of achievement after every successfully completed level (at no extra cost) so that you can keep track of all you have achieved.
We provide you with your own grooming kit to use on our herd at your first session.
We do not exercise our horses in the heat of the day in summer as horses feel the heat up to 10 times more than humans so they stay in their paddocks with unlimited forage, shade and we regularly help them to cool down with molasses water and misting water over them.
Experience what owning a horse could be like with full care, vet, feed, chiro, farrier, custom tack and all the other horse ownership stress all taken care of.

Level 1 harmonious horsemanship foundations
-
Everyone starts here whether you are new to horses or a seasoned horse person. Level 1 is the perfect introduction for both new and experienced equestrians looking to build a solid, trust-based relationship with their horses using natural communication and liberty-based techniques as well as to develop a good understanding of horse psychology. This level focuses on developing the essential skills needed to connect with and communicate effectively with your horse, exploring your boundaries, safety around horses and our herd’s etiquette. There is the option to be supported with your own horse and we will work within your herd’s etiquette but we mainly focus on working with our herd of schoolmasters.
We start with ropes and halters as we set our intentions, expectations, rules, boundaries, please and thank yous - making sure that everyone is safe whilst respecting and honouring us as humans and the horses as horses.
In Level 1, we focus on establishing a harmonious understanding of liberty work, laying the groundwork for more advanced skills and a deeper, more connected relationship with horses as sentient beings. The principles taught in this course emphasize respect, trust, and gentle guidance, creating a safe and supportive environment for both horse and rider. This allows us all to be speaking the same language as we then explore the more complex finesses of liberty.
Our horses are experts at mirroring and asking questions as well as supporting you to gain confidence building a lasting set of skills. Build trust and connection, uncover the power of energy and intention, learn essential groundwork and movement, how to respectfully set personal space boundaries, leading and following cues, stop and go cues, body positioning, groundwork patterns, focus and direction and increased understanding of horse behaviour to support you to progress to level 2.
Level 2 foundations
-
We will start to work on playing at liberty without a halter or rope and building trust between you and the horse and developing a connection which is more enticing to the horse than their horse herd or grass. The psychology and timing is essential to bringing joy to this interaction whilst honouring free will. Learn how your body language, intentions, attention to detail, empathy and leadership skills will revolutionise how you approach any horse in the future.
-
Learn the subtle cues and how to bring breathwork, intention, focus, attention to detail, leadership and empathy into the saddle to build a partnership which will exceed your expectations. To be a true horse person we must first regulate ourselves so that the horse will mirror our best version and with our tools we will support you to be a horse’s safe place. We do honour free will for both and honour if the horse declines for you to get on as this will be to keep you safe. We will support you if this happens and honour your relationship so that it continues to thrive.
-
We will go through the basics of long reining so that you understand the foundations and become so subtle that even from a distance the horse is reading your body language and listening to every voice and rein cue. See the happiness that this type of training brings to a horse as they feel successful in achieving such a high level skill.
Level 3 PREPARATORY
-
Take your liberty work to the next level by incorporating biomechanics and asking the horse to use their body correctly. What we will cover:
Walk and trot through intention, energy and breathwork with a touch of working canter.
Balance and steadiness - encourage the horse to step out correctly in his paces to a steady tempo.
Shape of patterns - attention to detail when requesting a figure of 8 or 15m circle, supporting the horse to carry himself correctly.
Proper bend - supporting the horse to use his body effectively.
Encourage the horse to be fluid and elastic in his movement.
-
In level 3, we want to be working in walk and trot paying attention to straight lines, bends and circles. The aids should be effortless without the coach seeing you pulling on either rein or kicking. We want balanced rising and sitting trots as well as turning from the outside aids and bending using inside leg to outside rein.

Level 4 prelim
-
Start introducing extreme accuracy and rhythm. Lots of transitions and getting your requests so subtle that an observer doesn’t see what you have requested. What we will cover:
Basic walk, trot and canter on circles and straight lines and working towards being 10m away from the horse.
The horse should move freely forward in a clear rhythm with a steady tempo.
Impulsion: The horse should step forward energetically with its hind feet
Straightness: The horse should move straight without swinging its hindquarters to the side
Relaxed: The horse should work through its back to make it easier to move from movement to movement and transition to transition.
Free walk: The horse should stretch as much as possible stretching out its topline.
Walk pirouette: A movement that is first seen at medium level. We cover this advanced move early as our horses find it really useful to balance and teach the correct aids.
