MAYBE YOU DON'T NEED TO OWN A HORSE

TO HAVE A HORSE OF YOUR OWN.

The same horse.
Your days.
Your relationship.
Your journey.

A mentored part lease with one of our schoolmaster horses — giving you regular days together, ongoing guidance and the chance to build a genuine relationship over time.

Expressions of interest are now open for our founding Northern Rivers members.

Perhaps you never stopped wanting a horse in your life

Life just got in the way. Agistment. The time. The expense. The enormous responsibility of doing it properly.

Perhaps you rode when you were younger and somewhere along the way, life became busy. Or perhaps horses have always been part of the life you imagined for yourself — just not one you can commit to seven days a week.

There is another way. Not a riding school. Not a different horse every week. And not quite horse ownership.

One horse to know deeply.

Welcome to the Australian Liberty Equestrian Academy (ALEA).

YOUR DAYS.
THEIR TIME.

Our Mentored Part Leases offer something that is becoming increasingly difficult to find:

time with a horse that feels like yours.

  • You'll be carefully matched with one of our schoolmaster horses and have your own regular days together each week.

  • Bring them in from the paddock.

  • Groom.

  • Learn their favourite scratching spot.

  • Notice the tiny expression that tells you you've asked the wrong question.

  • Learn horse care, groundwork and liberty.

  • Develop your riding where appropriate.

  • As your relationship develops, so will the possibilities.

Dressage. Working equitation. Tackless work. Beach adventures. Driving. Jumping. Or something entirely different.

The horse, the human and the relationship determine the path.

Some days you'll achieve something you've been working towards for weeks. Some days you'll simply spend time together. Both matter.

This isn't about fitting as much as possible into an hour.

This is horse time.

THE RELATIONSHIP COMES FIRST.

At ALEA, liberty isn't a separate discipline you do with your horse.

It's how you learn to know them.

You'll learn what makes your horse confident. What worries them. What motivates them. When they're asking a question. When you need to change yours.

They can say yes. They can say no. And sometimes they can suggest something neither of you had planned.

You'll learn timing, feel, body language, boundaries and biomechanics — without whips, spurs or forced compliance.

Over time, something changes.

You stop learning how to work with a horse.
You start learning how to work with your horse.

That's where liberty begins.

FOUNDING MEMBERSHIPS ARE LIMITED

Every ALEA horse works with only a small number of people. We won't add memberships by increasing the workload of our horses.

When their available days are matched, memberships for that horse close.

THERE IS A HORSE YOU HAVEN'T MET YET.

Perhaps it's Artax. Golden, competitive, enormously capable and a complete rule lover. Once you're his person, he'll be waiting at the gate for you — and may have something to say if you're late.

Perhaps it's Magic. Sensitive, talented and beautifully responsive. She notices everything. Find your centre and she finds hers.

Perhaps it's Uncle Jerry. 17.2hh of loyalty, intelligence and very strong opinions. Jerry doesn't give his trust away immediately. Once you're part of his herd, however, you're his.

Or perhaps it's someone you wouldn't have chosen at all.

That's rather the point.

We don't match horses from a catalogue.

The first step is meeting them.

THE BRIDGE BETWEEN RIDING SCHOOL AND HORSE OWNERSHIP.

We created ALEA for people who want more than riding lessons but aren't looking to own a horse outright.

Your membership gives you consistency. The same horse. Regular days. Time to learn. Mentorship when you need it. And greater independence as you grow together. And a community of people who believe that becoming a good horse person involves far more than learning to ride.

As your skills and relationship develop, your world together can grow too. Liberty. Riding. Tackless and bridleless work. Dressage. Working equitation. Beach adventures. Driving. Clinics. Community days.

And sometimes, absolutely nothing more ambitious than sitting quietly with your horse.

NOT EVERYONE WILL WANT THIS.

And that's intentional.

ALEA is a private equestrian community, not a public riding school. We don't offer casual riding lessons, pony rides or one-off trail rides. Membership requires consistency. Our horses need people who turn up. People who want to learn.

People who are curious about what the horse has to say.

People who care about becoming capable horse people, rather than simply becoming better riders.

We keep our community intentionally small so that our horses remain horses first.

Each horse works with a limited number of people and never becomes a revolving-door lesson horse.

YOUR FIRST VISIT ISN'T AN AUDITION.

It's an introduction.

We'll talk about your experience, what you miss about horses, what you'd love to learn and what you imagine your days here looking like.

Then you'll meet the herd.

Sometimes the horse someone expects to love isn't the horse who keeps coming back to them.

We rather like it that way.

NOT A HORSE TO RIDE. A HORSE TO KNOW.

Riding is part of what we do here.

But it isn't the product.

Your membership is time with your horse.

Some days you'll ride. Some days you'll work at liberty. Some days you'll solve a problem from the ground. And sometimes the best decision you'll make is not to ride at all.

Because becoming a horse person means learning to recognise the difference.

not every horse wants to be ridden

Some of our horses have decided their ridden chapter is over. But they're not done. They still want to play. To learn. To have opinions. To connect. To go places. To do things. They just don't want a human on their back anymore.

For some partnerships, that opens up an entirely different world — liberty, groundwork, long-reining, driving, walks and adventures together.

And for some people, that's exactly the relationship they've been looking for. Perhaps riding isn't important to you anymore either. Perhaps you simply miss having a horse in your life. A ridden career ending doesn't mean a horse's relationship with humans has to end.

And not every beautiful horse-and-human relationship needs to happen from the saddle.

Important Notice: Private Establishment

The Australian Liberty Equestrian Academy is a private equestrian property and a cooperative membership community. We are NOT a public riding school, commercial agistment centre, or trail-riding facility.

  • No Casual Bookings: We do not offer one-off horse riding lessons, trail rides, or pony rides for the general public.

  • Independent Memberships Only: Our part-lease programs are designed strictly for capable horse handlers, or those who want to become independent.

  • Our Pathway: Members must be able to safely interact, catch, tack, and handle horses completely independently. Our progressive levels work on increasing these specific skillsets so that you too can achieve true independence with horses.
